CHAPTER XV
DEGREE NAMES — THE SECOND INVERSION
We have already learned that the First Degree of the Scale is known as the Tonic, and that the Chord of which the First Degree of the Scale is the Root, is known as the Tonic Chord.
The remaining Degrees of the Scale are named as follows : Second Degree — Super-tonic, (upon or over the Tonic); Third Degree — Mediant, (half way between the First and Fifth Degrees); Fourth Degree Sub-Dominant, (the same distance below the Tonic as the Dominant, or Fifth Degree, is above it); Fifth Degree Dominant, (ruling the Scale); Sixth Degree Sub-Mediant, (halfway between Sub-Dominant and Tonic); Seventh Degree Leading Note, (leading to the Tonic). All the Common Chords are named in the same manner, according to the Positions in the Scale of their respective Roots.
The following Exercise is splendid practice.
' In the numbered spaces following, let the student write out the corresponding Chords as here prescribed, using the proper Position or Inversion and supplying any necessary Sharps or Flats. The first few Chords are given to show how the remainder are to be filled in.
